DESCRIPTION
The Independence Monument or Column of Independence, popularly known as El Ángel or El Ángel de la Independencia, is located in Mexico City, in the roundabout at the confluence of Paseo de la Reforma, Tiber River and Florence. Inaugurated in 1910 to commemorate the Centennial of the independence of Mexico by then President of Mexico, Porfirio Díaz, it is one of the more emblematic monuments of the city and is currently used as a cultural icon of it and a place of celebrations and national demonstrations.
Made as an honorary column topped with a statue of the Winged Victory holding a laurel wreath and a broken three-link chain, this column in turn stands on a stepped pedestal completed by different statues and inscriptions allegorical to the independence of Mexico.
